Dont let us be walked on

Dylan Weedherspoon  writes  “I am 24 and just bought a house in Langham. I love the environment and this province with all my heart. My grandfather worked this land with his hands to create food and life. Why is fortune minerals even being put up for vote? are there not enough examples of how things like this are just plain wrong. How many other provinces and territories turned them down already? I found 8. Why would we allow this? why would be allow our resources to die and get used up so a company can line there pockets with cash and give us nothing back in the end. These are things that need to be addressed, these are my concerns as a human, as a citizen, as a lover of this province. Dont let us be walked on. I want this included in the Councillors correspondence. “

Langham resident shares letter opposing the FM project

I am writing this to oppose the Fortune Mineral Plant by Langham, SK.  I moved to NE Langham 4 ½ years ago for many reasons: clean water, fresh air, small town, safe place for children to play, close to wildlife are a few of the reasons.

I feel strongly that the construction of the Fortune Minerals Metal Processing Plant’s near Langham would jeopardize all of these things that I have been enjoying by:

–        Clean water could be affected:

  • With ½ million gallons of water from Dalmeny’s freshwater aquifer being consumed each day by the plant our freshwater could be depleted
  • The toxic, corrosive solution being pumped through Dalmeny’s freshwater aquifer via injection wells could leak or destroy the aquifer ruining our freshwater supply

–        Fresh Air could be affected:

  • Dust blowing into town containing cancer-causing arsenic and asbestos particles would affect my health and that of my loved ones
  • 80 tonnes of Cyanide being used annually – deadly stuff I don’t want anywhere near where I live

–        Small Town/Safe Place for Children to Play:

  • With all the additional traffic from the mine coming and going into our town I am concerned that we will lose the small town feel and it may start to feel more industrial than quaint.  Also, with big trucks coming and going there is a greater risk to small kids safety and freedom of movement in and around the town

–        Wildlife could be scared away or poisoned

–        Bring Property Values down:

  • This would bring down the value of my new home if I should try to sell, nobody would purposely choose to live 3 km’s from this type of environmental disaster

Life in the prairies can be unpredictable enough with weather events that can cause uncontrollable damage.  This processing plant is something that we should never been considering as the potential damages are overwhelming…with no real benefit to our town or province.

Please stop this plant from being built before we all regret it!

Another concerned citizen says “NO” to the FM project

Hi my name is Kimberly and I am saying NO TO THE TOXIC PLANT. NOT IN MY BACK YARD!!

I have sent this email to Corman park and Yuen already.  I saw you on the news today and thought I should send it to you to, some one who cares.  My question is why don’t they build it in their back yard and leave ours alone?

This is my email.
Hi my name is Kimberly I am 44 years old. I grew up in  small town Martensville , which is now a city. I live on a small acreage near Martensville. We Enjoy the clean air and natural wild life that comes across out yard. We have a water way that over flows onto our yard, which supplies us with the beauty of wild life out our back door.  We live here so we can provide a safe home and environment for our kids and grandkids. I want this to continue being our home and safe haven.

If this or any other METAL PLANT OF TOXIC CHEMICALS comes here, we will be forced to move!!!. This new little city is just getting started don’t kill us before we even have a chance. Any thing that has the potential to harm OUR LAND AND WATER, OUR LIFE FORCE AND GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO BE CLEAN AND SAFE  NEEDS TO BE VETOED OUT OF EXCITING! .
We live here, we were here first and the is our Continue reading →

Proposal by Fortune Minerals affects water supplies to the world’s best food producing area

View of Aquifers Tyner Valley

Notes by B.Strand re: Executive summary by MDH Engineered Solutions for Fortune Minerals – View of Aquifers. Click image to enlarge.

Bjorn (Didrik) Strand,  Langham:    “It’s great that initiatives are taken to get everyone involved and taking action by emailing to SK Environment and to stop Fortune Minerals proposed plant.

I did a preliminary review of the Executive Summary by MDH Engineered Solutions on behalf of Fortune Minerals.

The Dalmeny Aquifer also flows into the underlying Tyner Valley Aquifer, which extends into Alberta. The Fortune Mineral’s proposal therefore also affects Alberta waters.

On the Global side of the issue, the proposal by Fortune Minerals affects water supplies to the world’s best food producing area.”

Cathy’s letter to Alvin Yuen and summary letter to other contacts

Hi everyone,

I just sent in my submission (or my first one, anyways!) to the Environmental Assessment process. I decided to do an in-depth submission focussing only on the actinolite asbestos health impacts issue, as I don’t know if anyone else is going to dig into that issue and I think it is really important. I submitted a  letter to Alvin Yuen Nov 2013, and I also wrote up a Summary Letter to contacts  and sent it along with my submission to the contacts Renee provided on her blog. I hope that even if they don’t read the longer submission they will at least get the basic info from the cover letter.

ciao for now,

Cathy

A Questionable Fortune for Langham?

By Ann Coxworth
Reprinted with permission from the Saskatchewan Environmental Society’s November/December 2013 newsletter.

130 residents of the Langham/Dalmeny area gathered at the Langham Community Hall on a wintery November 5th evening to share their concerns about a proposed industrial development in this prime agricultural area.

Fortune Minerals Ltd, a small company with no track record in this type of operation, is seeking approval to build a metal refinery that would process ore from a proposed mine near Hay River, NWT. Ore would be shipped by rail to Langham, and then processed to extract gold, cobalt, copper and bismuth. Arsenic-containing Continue reading →
